An interesting progression from yesterday

Got an email this morning from my friend up at [chcr] about SOCAN and tariff 22 (do a search, there's lots going on about it), which is coming down to the wire. They've been working on "it" since 1995/6, and it's a prime example of why I have been uncomfortable as a member from the start. All I want is compensation when money is made with my work (ie. when played through commercial channels). I don't think I should be paid every time something I've done is listened to- or played with, or taken into some creative dialogue, and if it finds some commercial "success", then flow some of that back to where it came from- proportional to the gains made. Just as if it gains popularity, then give credit when asked. Making a living as an artist can be a tough go, but taxing people is not the way to go- that's only gonna piss em off! Not unlike the tariff on blank media in Canada, so I get to pay "top" artists every time I burn a CD of my own stuff- I know, there's a form I can fill out and get it back or buy them special, in the end it's hard not to see a bit of a "conspiracy" against the independent artist... certainly there is some dark forces against independent radio. Be sure to check out [National Campus and Community Radio Association] for info and audio- get those streams now, they might not be there much longer... Thanks SOCAN!
